Register now! Taiwan Talks on 22. August
In 1971, Taiwan lost its seat at the UN when UN Resolution 2758 recognised the People’s Republic of China as only representative of China to the UN. However, Resolution 2758 did not make a statement on the status of Taiwan itself, much less that it was a part of China. As a de-facto sovereign state, Taiwan still enjoys protection under international law.
In recent years, China has intensified its efforts to delegitimise Taiwan‘s status under international law by promoting the ”One China Principle“, which states that Resolution 2758 constitutes the foundation of a legitimate claim of China over Taiwan. China already has succeeded in persuading a large number of countries to endorse the ”One China Principle“ to varying degrees. China’s ”lawfare“ against Taiwan has been interpreted as preparatory stage for an annexation.
This edition of Taiwan Talks will take a closer look at the Chinese argument and the actual facts, the difference of a ”One China Policy“ and the ”One China Principle“ and will reflect on the threat to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait posed by China‘s delegitimisation efforts.
